Parish Council

The St. Charles Borromeo Parish Council meets the second Monday of each month.

The purpose of the Parish Council is to be a representative body of the Parish family

which will serve as as advisory body to the Pastor.

Meeting Minutes October 13, 2008

Opening Prayer/Scripture Sharing

Richard Veit opened the meeting with a Gospel reading from Matthew 22: 1-14. Members shared their reflections. Fr. John challenged the Council to think about how we can reach out to parishioners to invite them to the “feast.” CRHP is a wonderful example of this.

Officer Elections

Tim Delicath resigned his position as Council Chair effective September 5, 2008. Nominees for Council Chair: Amy Burke, Kevin Cullinan. Kevin Cullinan elected as Council Chairperson.

Parish Council Retreat

Follow-up from September 6, 2008 retreat. Reviewed Commissions of the Parish Council. Goal is to establish Parish Council liaisons to each commission. Council discussed each category and recommended additional changes. Kathy will update for next meeting. The following liaisons were identified:

Worship: J Waigand/Bob Poeling

Youth: Anna Shirley/Gary Rice/Trudi Heisohn

Outreach/Social Concerns: Nancy Page/Richard Veit

Spiritual Life: Responsibility of all Parish Council members

Education: Trudi Heisohn/Yazmin Panjwani

Administration: Neal Lang

Stewardship: Responsibility of the Parish Council members

Community Building: Lupe Plaza/Yazmin Panjwani/Miriam Long

Each ministry/organization of our parish should provide an annual update to the Parish Council. This process provides an opportunity to offer the support and appreciation of the Council and encourage growth and accountability. Yazmin recommended developing a script and/or a standardized approach to contacting each ministry. Kevin will contact Peggy at the office to obtain the list of current contacts for each group.

Group discussed highlighting a different ministry each week at Mass and offering a special blessing and/or commissioning.

Develop a calendar for appreciation at Masses.

“Ministry of the Week” in the bulletin, highlighting the work of the ministry. Liaisons to coordinate the highlights for the bulletin.

Recognition/appreciation will begin October 18/19 with picnic/trivia night volunteers.

November 22/23: Gift Bearers

Additional ministry recognition dates will be set at next Council meeting.

Executive Planning Meeting

Our next Parish Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 10, 2008 with Council member-led scripture reading and reflection. Bob Poeling volunteered for November 10.

Meeting Minutes—August 11, 2008

OPENING PRAYER/SCRIPTURE SHARING

Fr. John opened the meeting with a prayer and a Gospel reading. Members shared their reflections and offered prayers.

OLD BUSINESS

Parish Picnic: Update provided by Steve Wegener

· Jim and Peggy Castiglione/Jason and Beth Norviel identified as 2009 picnic co-chairs.

· Washer tournament planned for Friday evening 7:30—10:00 p.m. Cost $30 per team.

· Next picnic meeting scheduled for August 26 at 7:00 p.m.

· Volunteer sign-up is available online and also after Masses (thanks to Scott McCullough and Angie Thro).

· SCB Run/Walk is Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. Registrations due by September 20.

· Raffle tickets will be sold after Masses (5 for $20 or 1 for $5).

· Currently have 2 sponsors for Trivia Night (goal is 10). Eighteen booth sponsors already identified (goal is 25).

· Silent Auction plans going well, but additional items are needed.

· Dinner: first food order will be placed soon. Prices are same as last year.

Officer Elections

Nominees for Council Chair: Tim Delicath, Amy Burke, Kevin Cullinan, Jay Waigand and Neal Lang. Tim Delicath elected as council chairperson.

Nominees for Vice Chair: Amy Burke, Kevin Cullinan, Nancy Page, Richard Veit, and Jay Waigand. After initial vote, a run-off was called for between Amy Burke and Kevin Cullinan. Amy Burke elected as council vice-chair.

Nominees for Secretary: Kathy Bonser. Kathy Bonser was elected secretary.

Tim Delicath will contact Aleece Vogt to transition council leadership.

Parish Council Retreat

Confirmed for September 6 from 8:30—4:30 p.m. at ASH. Richard Veit and Kevin Cullinan will bring breakfast food and fruit. Nancy Page will order deli sandwich and chips and council members will bring their own drinks.

Retreat planning committee identified: Fr. John, Richard Veit, Bob Poeling, and Kevin Cullinan.

NEW BUSINESS

Stewardship Sunday

Festival of Ministries will be deferred until cafeteria renovations are complete. Fr. John asked for feedback regarding stewardship Sunday September 21. Theme will be parish finances and tithing and appreciation.

Unity Sunday

Mass will be celebrated on Sunday September 7 at 11:30 a.m. at Bales-DuSable Park. All parish council members plan to attend for blessing and following barbeque and games.

Fr. John also discussed the Social Concerns Committee and invited members to attend the next meeting on Monday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m.

Visioning Exercise

Fr. John discussed the role of the parish council and explained the council‘s role in creating the vision for the parish. This will be discussed in greater depth at the retreat.

Parish Ministry Appreciation ideas: Individual ministry appreciation (i.e. wine and cheese party for each group) too difficult. Ideas include: groups report at Parish Council, spotlight ministries in the bulletin and post group pictures in back of Church, parish council members serve as liaison for various ministries, commission ministries at Mass.

Reviewed/revised Appendix 1 of Parish Council bylaws. Commissions include:
